Reference Files

Reference File Documentation

Each reference file attachment shall be documented in the design file where it is attached. If a specific file is attached more than once, it should be documented for each attachment. A form is provided with the BORDER Cell, to the right of the border trim line.  The form contains data fields for entering all information.

The documentation form includes the following information for each reference file attachment.

Any information required to reconstruct the reference file attachment should be included in the documentation.  The user should assume that someone who is completely unfamiliar with the project will have to reconstruct the drawing, and the documentation should make that process as easy as possible.

Hard Copy of Reference File Documentation

A hard copy plot of each reference file documentation sheet shall be submitted with the final submittal of the CAD files.

Modifying Element Weight by Setting Reference File Logical Names:

MicroStation reference files can be attached with a logical name. The IPLOT pen table reads this logical name and modifies the appearance of the plot based on that name. This feature is used primarily to modify the thickness of the proposed pipeline on each drawing sheet.

Logical Name = “SCREEN”

Any elements displayed in a reference file that has the logical name “SCREEN” will be plotted as dithered elements unless those elements are color 183.  All color 183 elements will be plotted as solid.

Logical Name = “B*”, or “Y*”, or “R*”, or “P*”

Colors 170 through 173 are used to control the appearance of proposed pipe.  When a project includes more than one pipeline Extension Number, then the proposed pipeline is shown as a lighter weight line on all sheets except the sheet where it is being detailed. In order to plot proposed pipe (weight 7) as existing (weight 2), the color of the elements are used.

All proposed pipe is drawn in the master file, on level 17, using a weight 7 line.  Each pipeline Extension is drawn using a different color, from 170 through 173.  The master file is then attached to the sheet file, with a logical name that starts the first letter of the color that you want to see heavy on that sheet.

For example, if your project has three extension numbers, and you are working on the sheet that details the extension drawn in yellow (color171), then assign a logical name beginning with ‘Y...’ to the file.  The logical name can be any name that starts with the letter “Y”.  When the sheet file is plotted, the yellow pipe will appear it’s normal weight (as drawn), but all other colors of proposed pipe will be plotted as if they are weight 2.
